China and Kazakhstan have agreed to pursue a plan to mutually utilize each other's space launch sites to strengthen cooperation in the field of space development.
This agreement was signed during Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Kazakhstan on the 3rd.
China is experiencing a shortage of launch sites due to the rapidly increasing demand for rocket launches and the rise of private space companies within the country.
Against this backdrop, China proposed this cooperation to address the launch site shortage by utilizing Kazakhstan's space launch sites.
Kazakhstan is geographically advantageous as it borders Xinjiang, in western China.
Therefore, if Chinese rockets use Kazakhstan's launch sites, it is expected to significantly contribute to solving China's launch site shortage issue.
Kazakhstan's representative space launch site is the Baikonur Cosmodrome, which was built by the former Soviet Union and is currently leased to Russia until 2050.
However, through this cooperation, other launch sites besides Baikonur might also be utilized in collaboration with China.
This agreement is considered the first step towards strengthening space cooperation between China and Kazakhstan and is expected to play an important role in the future development of the aerospace industries of both countries.
