Hyundai Rotem has signed a new agreement to secure a formal contract for the Polish variant of the K2 tank (K2PL).
Hyundai Rotem announced on the 10th that it had signed a new consortium agreement with Poland’s state-owned defense group PGZ on the 9th (local time) in Poland to proceed with the production and delivery of the K2PL.
The signing ceremony was attended by Pawel Weder, Poland's Deputy Minister of Defense; Krzysztof Trofiniak, President of PGZ; Lim Hoon-min, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Poland; and Lee Yong-bae, President and CEO of Hyundai Rotem, along with government and corporate officials from both countries.
The new agreement was executed as a follow-up procedure to extend consortium cooperation, as the existing consortium contract expired last month. Both companies plan to accelerate cooperation within the consortium to sign the second implementation contract for the K2PL within the year.
The K2PL consortium, first formed in March last year, is based on the comprehensive contract signed between Hyundai Rotem and the Polish Armaments Agency in July 2022. The key focus is on establishing local production capabilities for the K2PL tanks in Poland and ensuring timely delivery.
The active diplomatic support from the Korean government played a decisive role in the new consortium agreement.
Last month, Minister of National Defense Shin Won-sik held the ‘2nd Korea-Poland Defense and Defense Industry Cooperation Joint Committee’ with Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz in Poland, agreeing to provide full government support and cooperation to finalize the second implementation contract for the K2 tanks as quickly as possible.
Meanwhile, Hyundai Rotem has responded to local trust by delivering a total of 46 K2 tanks (K2GF) to Poland early and on time by the first half of this year.
An additional 38 tanks are scheduled to be delivered in the second half of this year, and 96 more next year, completing the delivery of a total of 180 tanks required urgently.
Particularly, in addition to the standard performance tests conducted upon completion of tank production, additional diagnostics are being performed to ensure the quality of the K2 tanks.
A Hyundai Rotem official stated, “Through the signing of this new consortium agreement, we will further strengthen our cooperation with PGZ to successfully complete the thoroughly prepared K2PL project and contribute to the modernization of Poland's military.”
