Gyeonggi Province announced on the 10th that, after investigating 693 individuals who owe more than 30 million won in local taxes from April to June, it has requested the Ministry of Justice to impose a travel ban on 344 individuals suspected of evading tax payments.
The province annually investigates individuals who owe more than 30 million won in local taxes, focusing on those for whom asset seizure is difficult or who are suspected of fleeing abroad to hide assets. This includes reviewing foreign currency transaction records and international travel histories to determine the targets for the travel ban.
To strengthen administrative sanctions against high-amount tax delinquents, since last year, the province has expanded the criteria for travel ban requests from provincial tax delinquency to nationwide aggregation.
A key example involves Mr. A, who owes 480 million won in local income taxes. It was found that all of Mr. A’s family members, except for him, frequently traveled abroad or lived abroad for extended periods. This led to the judgment that Mr. A, despite having the ability to pay, is deliberately evading tax payments, and thus was included in the travel ban list.
The travel ban period is six months for domestic residents and three months for foreigners, with extensions possible if necessary.
From August to December last year, Gyeonggi Province conducted an investigation on 9,540 individuals owing more than 30 million won in local taxes, and requested travel bans for 361 of them.
Roh Seung-ho, head of the Provincial Tax Justice Division, stated, "We will do our utmost to manage high-amount and habitual tax delinquents who deliberately evade their tax obligations, leading the way in securing tax revenue and realizing tax justice."
